Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
